Finally, a new release of ToeTag! This one is pretty good as it (hopefully) fixes the WAD loading crash but also adds some good features.
DOWNLOAD HERE (this link includes the APP itself and a separate download link for the source code)
First, you can now create fully custom WAD files now from within the editor. ToeTag can export textures from WADs (to PNG files), read new textures in from a variety of formats, and also rename/delete textures already loaded. All of this combined means custom WADs are go!
Next I added box selection. This is a quick way to select a bunch of stuff in your level at once. In the 2D viewport, hold down SHIFT+CMD and LEFT_CLICK+DRAG to draw a box. When you let go of the mouse button, everything that touches that box will be selected. This is useful for grabbing a whole portion of your level at once.
I added some keyboard short cuts for the hide functionality. CMD+H will hide currently selected, CMD+I will isolate currently selected (aka hide everything not selected), and CMD+SHIFT+H will unhide everything currently hidden. This is a productivity enhancement as it’s a pain to have to click on the toolbar for quick hides/isolates.
On the smaller feature front, there’s a small feature added to the entity menu. If you select a series of path_corner entities you can use a menu item called “Create Route”. This will link the path_corners together into a route. This is great for setting up patrolling creatures. Just create a route and then target the monster at one of the path_corners.

it appears to crash a lot less. At first it did again, but then it didn’t. I was able to open a .map file, and create a new map. So it looks usable for me now, cool!
Automated path_corner routing sounds like a great feature. They can be quite a repetitive annoyance to set up by hand.
My biggest request would be the ability to fly around the map by arrow keys or wsad. I’m typing from a laptop here, and I don’t have my mouse with me so it’s not even possible to perform most of the camera controls to have a quick look around a map. I’ve never used Maya, Cinema4d, or Blender much, but I’m guessing something like those were your reference points for the controls, and I realize that flying by arrow keys would go against that paradigm of camera control… it’s just something to think about. In maps I’m working on, I’d like to fly down hallways and check views as if I was a player in game, and it seems hard to do that when I have to press a combo of buttons to move the camera.
I will try to learn your system nonetheless.
Sorry about the camera controls but I’m glad the crashing is fixed (or, at least reduced). Awesome! Thanks for the info and feedback…
I’ll see about adding keyboard navigation for a future version.
Hi Warren, I’ve just installed the app and put Quake on my Mac – last time was with Quiver back in OS8 days!
I get this message when compiling the bsp:
— FinishBSPFile —
WriteBSPFile: /Applications/Quake/id1/maps/test_room.bsp
************ ERROR ************
Error opening /Applications/Quake/id1/: No such file or directory

Any thoughts on what this could be?
Hi, WIllem, I’ve been trying again my hand at learning Toetag. There are still a few issues that prevent me from building anything complex. TT pointer keeps on disappearing everytime I try to move around using Middle Mouse Drag, sometimes switching app is enough to bring it back, the 80% of times TT freezes completely, leaving no other choice but forcing app to close. Sometimes, launching QUAKE from inside TT hangs the whole system. I somehow learned a few of the basics of Quake mapping, and I’d like to try to build a full one, but the editor keeps on letting me down… Any advices? Do You plan to further develop it?
Not sure what’s going on there Silent. I DO plan to release a new version but I have to get it working on Snow Leopard first. It hard locks the system when you try and click things which is just the sort of issue that users don’t like. I’m working on it!
yea i got the same problem as trippa. I get this message:
— FinishBSPFile —
WriteBSPFile: /Applications/Quake/id1/maps/one_room.bsp
************ ERROR ************
Error opening /Applications/Quake/id1/one_room.bsp: No such file or directory
—
WriteBSPFile: /Quake/id1/maps/piss.bsp
************ ERROR ************
Error opening /Quake/id1/: No such file or directory
it wont write the file. pls post the answer there’s no help on this anywhere!
I think that error means that your WAD file is not in the “id1/gfx” directory. The current version of ToeTag requires that, sorry!
Hey, I can’t launch my map when I press play, how do I fix this?
